What drives compliance automation pricing
Short answer
Six inputs drive a compliance automation quote: how many frameworks you need, your headcount, whether the audit is arranged through the vendor, whether a pen test is included, how much expert help you want, and how many security questionnaires you answer. Most vendors in our census publish limits on some of these, but only Secureframe publishes a price.

A compliance automation subscription is priced on a small number of inputs. Vendors rarely print the formula, but their plan pages show which inputs move you from one tier to the next. Read together, the seven pricing pages in our census point to the same six drivers.
Frameworks
The first driver is how many frameworks you need at once. Entry plans are usually stated as one framework: Vanta Essentials lists "One framework", Drata Compliance Automation Foundation lists "1 pre-mapped framework", Secureframe Fundamentals lists "1 compliance framework" and Scytale Build Starter lists "1 framework". A second framework means an add-on (Drata names "Additional frameworks" as a Foundation add-on) or a higher tier.
Headcount
The second driver is company size. Only Drata publishes a number here: Foundation covers up to 50 FTEs. Other vendors do not print a headcount limit, but a quote will ask for it.
The audit
A SOC 2 report is issued by a CPA firm, not by the software. The platform prepares you and collects evidence; the audit is a separate engagement. Some vendors broker or bundle the audit: Secureframe Fundamentals lists access to its Audit Partner Network, Sprinto Foundation lists network auditor access and bring your own auditor, Scytale describes a Built-In Audit with partner auditors, and Thoropass runs audits itself.
Penetration testing
Scytale lists a pen test inside its Build DFY bundle (web app, black box) and its Build Stronger bundle (gray box). Thoropass lists penetration testing as part of its platform. The other pricing pages we read do not list one, so a pen test there is a separate purchase.
Expert services
Human help is the input that varies most in how it is sold. Scytale bundles LaunchReady Consulting in Build DFY and StayReady Consulting in Build Stronger, and describes a dedicated compliance expert with weekly meetings. Vanta and Drata deliver services through partner networks. Sprinto Foundation lists 24x5 email and in-app support.
Security questionnaires
Two vendors publish an annual allowance: Vanta (25 per year on Plus, 144 on Professional) and Sprinto (20 per year on Foundation). If you answer many questionnaires, this line can decide the tier.
What one vendor says it prices on
Comp AI, which is not in our census, lists its pricing factors on its pricing page: frameworks, company size, timeline, and audit and security needs. That list matches the drivers above closely, and adds timeline, which the other pages do not mention.
How to use this
Write your answer to each of the six inputs before the first sales call. Then run them through the calculator, which shows which published tier fits at each vendor and which plan limits you would cross. It will not give you a price for six of the seven vendors, because they publish none.
